Do you like to read? Reading is one of my favorite hobbies. I try to read for 15 minutes every day, but sometimes Chana (my dog) doesn't let me!

Have you ever thought about reading a book in English?  Some people think it will be too hard, so they give up before they even try. But I know you can do it!  You need to choose a book that is right for your English level, your age, and your interests.  Here are some books I've been reading with my students. At the bottom of the page, I've provided you some information on how to get free books and audio books in English.

Young Readers (8-10 years old)
  • A Jigsaw Jones Mystery: The Case of the Buried Treasure by James Preller
This book is a good start for young learners ages 6-8. Some kids find a treasure map and have an adventure trying to find what's hidden. Read more or buy here.
  • The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White
A classic story about a swan born without a voice. He has great adventures on the journey to winning his true love's heart. Read more or buy here.
  • Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
A classic about a pig named Wilbur. Wilbur is raised by a young girl named Fern, but Wilbur is going to be killed for food! Wilbur meets some amazing animals who help try to save his life. Read more or buy here.


Middle Readers (10-12 years old)
  • The Giver by Louis Lowry
A young boy lives in a perfect society, but when he begins training for his new job, he finds out that things aren't what they seem. This book won the Newbery Medal for outstanding children's literature. Read more or buy here.
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket
Three rich children lose their parents in a mysterious accident. They are sent to live with a distant relative who is just horrible! What is his true reason for adopting the orphans? Read more or buy here.
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart
This  is  a  mysterious  book  indeed!  It's  good  for  intermediate/advanced  young  learners  in  their  teens.  It's a story about some really talented kids who accept a dangerous secret mission to save the world.   • When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
This book won the Newbery Medal last year. It's about a 6th grader who gets mysterious messages that predict the future.  Read more or buy here.
  • Holes by Louis Sachar
Another Newbery Medal winner. This book tells the story of a young boy who gets arrested and punished for a crime. He is sent to a place called Camp Green Lake, where the boys are forced to dig holes every day. What are they looking for? Read more or buy here.

  • Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery
This was and still is one of my favorite books. It's about a young orphan girl who is adopted and her trials in life, school, and love. Read more or buy here. Read it for free online or download it for your mobile device here (100% legal copy).
Teen Readers
  • Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson
Some special kids and teens were created by scientists. Their DNA was mixed with bird DNA, so they all have super abilities. This is the story of their fight for freedom and search for the truth about their identity. Read more or buy here.

  • Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes
After a tragic accident, a young girl receives a journal entry from a former classmate that changes her life in a dramatic way. Read more or buy here.

Higher Level Teen Readers and Adult Readers
  • Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
This is a challenging novel because of the language and the way the timeline of the story flows. I'm still reading this one! Read more or buy here.
  • Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw
Have you ever seen the famous musical, "My Fair Lady"? It's based on this book, but the musical is not exactly the same. The book follows the transformation of a young lady from a commoner into a cultured lady in society.   • Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom
A touching story about a student and his dying professor.  His professor teaches him many lessons about life. This book is very thought-provoking and it will make you reflect on your own life.  Read more or buy here.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Set in the Southern United States long ago, this famous classic tells the story of kids growing up, frienship, racism, and societal norms. You can learn a lot from this book! Read more or buy here.
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell
A very famous book about animals who take over their farm and form their own society.  What lessons can we learn? Read more or buy here.

 FREE BOOKS IN ENGLISH!!
You can get many books for free (and 100% legal) on the Internet.  It's legal in the USA if the books are in the public domain (copyright expired), but I encourage you to make sure it's ok to use in your country if you live outside the USA.  Read books on your computer, iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader,, iPhone, Android, and other portable devices. Project Gutenberg has many available--over 33,000! Visit their site.
